Q: What regulations are underground tanks subject to?
A: At this time there are no federal laws governing active, underground, home heating oil storage tanks. However, we encourage you to contact state, county or municipal authorities to learn if there are any local regulations.
You can find information on the regulations in your state by following one of the links below:

Q: What options do I have for testing my underground tank?
A: There are several testing methods used today. Computerized sonic or ultrasound methods don't put stress on the tank and are gaining in popularity. Pressure or vacuum tests are reliable, but they put stress on the tank; if performed improperly they can cause leaks. Another method is to test the soil around the tank. Soil borings are noninvasive and in our area tend to be less expensive than other tank testing methods.

Q: Can I replace my old underground storage tank with a new one?
A: Yes, however, the National Oilheat Research Alliance recommends that homeowners replace underground tanks with new, leak-proof aboveground models. Even though modern underground tanks are made of double-walled plastic and fiberglass so they won't corrode, there's still a chance leaks can develop in the piping if the tank is not properly installed. Either way, check with your local municipality for regulations regarding the replacement and/or decommissioning of an underground tank.

Q: Where should I put my new aboveground tank?
A: Because heating oil is biodegradable and safe to store inside a home, you can have your new leak-proof safety tank installed in your basement, a closet, a garage or in your yard.
