How To Fix Common Oil Furnace Problems
Troubleshooting your oil furnace
You wake up one morning in your Hudson valley home and you’re cold—really, really cold. Your oil furnace isn’t working. How do you handle this nightmare? Don’t panic. Before you call for service there are a few things you can do to troubleshoot the problem yourself. And if you do need service, know that you can always count on the experts at Bottini fuel to repair your furnace and get it up and running again.
If your oil furnace isn’t working…
If your oil furnace isn’t working, follow the steps below:
Adjust your thermostat five degrees higher than the current room temperature. (Some thermostats also require you to select the “heat” setting.) If your furnace doesn’t start up after a few minutes, go to step 2.
Make sure that your system’s power switch is set to the “on” position. If it is, go to step 3.
Check the level of your oil tank. Is it at least 1/8 full? If you have less than 1/8 of a tank, call Bottini Fuel for a heating oil delivery. We can also install a wireless tank monitor, so you won’t have to worry about running low on oil again. If you have more than 1/8 of a tank, go to step 4.
Check your circuit breaker box. Are all the circuit breakers on? If they are, go to step 5.
Turn off the system’s power so you can check how clean your filters are. A clogged filter can cause your system to overheat and shut down. To locate the filter, look along the return air duct. If it’s clean, go to step 6.
Press and hold the “reset” button on the burner for 3 seconds. Do not push this button more than once. If your heat doesn’t come on after a few moments, contact Bottini Fuel for service. One of our friendly, well-trained employees will be there to help you asap.
