Why Isn’t My Heating System Working?

You hope it doesn’t happen, but what do you do if your heating system isn’t working? First of all, don’t panic. There are a few things you can try before you call for service to troubleshoot the problem on your own. Especially with winter just around the corner, it’s important to know what to do if your heating system stops working. So keep reading for a summary of what to do.

No Heat? Try This.

Don’t panic but do act immediately. The colder it is the more of an emergency it is to be without heat. If your heating system isn’t working, before you call for service, try the following:

1. Raise your thermostat to at least five degrees above current room temperature. (You may also need to change your thermostat’s setting to “heat.”) If your heating system doesn’t kick in after a few minutes, go to step 2.
2. Make sure your system’s power switch is set to the “on” position. If it is, go to step 3.
3. Check your fuel levels. If you have less than 1/8 of a tank, call Bottini Fuel for fuel delivery. We deliver both heating oil and propane. If you have more than 1/8 of a tank, go to step 4.
4. Take a look at your circuit breaker box. Are all the circuit breakers on? If yes and you have a boiler, go to step 5. If yes and you have a furnace, go to step 6.
5. If you have a steam boiler, check the water level in the gauge glass. Is it at least ½ full? If it is, go to step 7. If you have a hot water boiler, go to step 7.
6. Make sure your filters are clean. A clogged filter can cause your system to overheat and shut down. However, before checking the filter, first turn off the system’s power. If the filter is clean, go to step 7.
7. Press and hold the “reset” button on your burner for 3 seconds. Important: Do not push this button more than once. If your heating system doesn’t start running, it’s time to contact Bottini Fuel for service.
