Winter is upon us in the Hudson Valley! Make sure you’re not left in the cold as the temperatures continue to dip. As a propane customer, there are a few things you need to stay on top of during the winter months. You have pay special attention to your propane level and the accessibility to your propane tank. This is especially true leading up to, during, and following a winter storm. Keep reading for your winter propane tank care checklist.
Propane tank cold season maintenance
Follow the six steps below to help keep your family (and the Bottini Fuel delivery crew) safe all winter:
Mark your tank by attaching a brightly-colored flag to the top of it. This will make it possible for our delivery crew to find your tank even when the weather affects visibility. This flag will also help our drivers to safely and effectively position their trucks for delivery.
Make sure there is always a clear path to your tank. Regularly remove any snow or ice that may have accumulated and made it hard to reach your tank for proper maintenance, gas level monitoring, and refilling.
Remove any snow that’s accumulated on your tank. After you’ve made a clear a path to your propane tank, use a broom to clear snow and ice from the tank itself. Don’t use a shovel for this part. That could put a hole in your tank and lead to a propane gas leak.
Check your vents and flues regularly to make sure they’re clear. This will prevent a build-up of carbon monoxide in your home. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a serious medical emergency and can be fatal. Test your carbon monoxide detectors monthly and replace the batteries at least twice a year. Also keep in mind that carbon monoxide detectors have a lifespan of roughly 5 to 7 years before they should be replaced entirely.
Keep a vigilant eye on your tank’s propane level if you’re not an automatic delivery customer. The colder it gets, the more frequently you need to check because your usage will increase. Call Bottini Fuel before your tank is less than one-quarter full. And don’t wait until the last minute, because winter is our busiest season. However, you can greatly simplify your to do list by signing up for automatic propane delivery. We’ll track your usage and the weather and determine an appropriate delivery schedule, so you never have to give it a second thought or worry about a run-out.
Familiarize yourself with how to respond to a propane tank leak. Let your nose be your guide. If there’s a leak, it will smell like rotten eggs. The minute you think you smell something, it’s time to act. Click here for instructions on what to do if you smell gas.
