The new energy tax: just the beginning

New York State continues to move ahead with a plan they call Cap and Invest. This is basically a new tax on companies that sell energy based on its estimated greenhouse gas impact.

Of course, these new costs will get passed on to every consumer in the state, affecting everything from the cost of heating, cooling, transportation, food prices and more. Because all of these are impacted by higher fuel costs.

There’s more bad news. If fully implemented, the state’s “Climate Action Plan” would require you to ultimately convert your homes and cars to electricity, no matter how expensive that becomes or how unreliable the electric grid turns out to be.

But it’s critical we implement more thoughtful ways that balance cost, speed, technology, and impact. Innovations like renewable Bioheat® fuel and renewable propane gas can make a big difference and play a valuable role with far less cost and disruption than electrification alone.

We urge you to visit smarternyenergy.org to learn what you can do about this. Unless our lawmakers in Albany hear from enough of us, they’ll believe we’re perfectly happy giving them a blank check to pursue their narrow, extreme plans.
