When Do I Call for Heating Repair?

No Heat? Here’s What to Do.

heating service new york This winter hasn’t brought record-breaking snow to the Hudson Valley (yet), but it has given us some bitterly cold days. That means your heating system has been getting a workout.

We hope your heating system continues to provide comfortable warmth for you and your family all winter long, but should you find yourself with a heating system that isn’t coming on, there are a few things you can try before you call for service.

These troubleshooting steps could save you a service call. But if you do need end up needing heating service or repairs, you can trust the experts at Bottini Fuel to be there for you. We’ve got you covered.

Troubleshooting Tips

If your heating system isn’t kicking on and your home is cold, you don’t need to panic. But you should act quickly. If your house gets too cold, it could put you and your family at risk, and you could also end up with frozen or burst pipes. Those are both problems you want to avoid.

Before you call for heating repair, take the following steps to see if they resolve the problem:

  1. Set your thermostat at least five degrees above the current room temperature. And make sure your thermostat’s “heat” setting is engaged (if it has one). If nothing happens after a few minutes, go to step 2.
  2. Confirm that your system’s power switch is set to the “on” position. If it is, go to step 3.
  3. Check how much fuel you have. Whether you use heating oil or propane, your tank should be at least 1/8 full. If it isn’t, call Bottini Fuel for delivery. If you have more than 1/8 of a tank, go to step 4.
  4. Check your circuit breaker box. Are all the circuit breakers on? If they are and you have a boiler, go to step 5. If they are and you have a furnace, go to step 6.
  5. If you have a steam boiler, make sure the water level in the gauge glass is at least ½ full. If it is, go to step 7. If you have a hot water boiler, go to step 7.
  6. Make sure your filters are clean. A clogged filter can cause your system to overheat and shut down. However, before checking the filter, turn off the system’s power. If the filter is clean, go to step 7.
  7. Press and hold the “reset” button on your burner for 3 seconds. Never push this button more than once.

If you’ve done all of the above and your heating system still hasn’t started up, it’s time to call for heating repair. One of Bottini Fuel’s service technicians will provide you with professional, reliable, and speedy service to get your heat back on as soon as possible.
