Every season in the Hudson Valley has its safety concerns, and winter is no different. Every time there’s a snowstorm, you have an opportunity to take some important steps to keep your family safe. You’ll also be doing your part to help the Bottini Fuel team do our job in safer conditions.
Especially in the days before, during, and following a winter storm, take the following steps to help keep your family and the Bottini Fuel team safe this winter as we work to deliver for you:
Our delivery crew needs safe access to your property. Be sure to remove any snow or ice that has accumulated along your walkway and driveway.
If you’re not one of our automatic delivery customers, keep a watchful eye on your fuel levels. Changes in the weather could cause your fuel usage to change dramatically. Call Bottini Fuel for delivery before your tank is less than ¼ full. Don’t wait. The winter season is our busiest time, and that could make scheduling a delivery more difficult. You don’t want to risk having a runout while you’re waiting. Being without heat and hot water during the winter months isn’t just inconvenient, it can be dangerous.
Better yet, why not leave all the fuel level monitoring and delivery scheduling to us? Just sign up to become one of our automatic delivery customers. We offer this service free of charge to both our propane and heating oil customers.
Propane Customers
If you’re one of our propane customers, fasten a brightly-colored flag to the top of your tank. This will help our delivery drivers find it in the snow and on low visibility days and safely position their trucks.
Clear a path to and remove any snow that accumulates on your tank. Use a broom instead of a shovel when clearing off the tank. A shovel could put a hole in your tank and cause a propane gas leak.
Routinely check your vents and flues for obstructions. This is an important safety step because it helps prevent the build-up of carbon monoxide in your house. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a serious medical emergency that can be fatal.
You should also test your carbon monoxide detectors every month and replace their batteries every six months. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for replacing the whole unit (usually every 5 to 7 years).
It’s important that everyone in your household knows how to identify and respond to a propane leak. Click here for more information.
Heating Oil Customers
If you’re one of our heating oil customers, make sure to clear a path so that your fill pipe is easily accessible. And clean any snow and ice off it.
